My Musical Footprint

A lot of why I love music and the type of music that I love now is because of the artists that my parents, sister, and grandmother introduced me to. So the first six songs are examples of my childhood and how I grew up with music :) The seventh-tenth songs are about my teenage years, growing up, and young love. The last two songs are the songs I want at my wedding and the song I want to sing to my children, so my future songs.

#1. "The Burn O'Craigie", by The Old  Blind Dogs.

I chose this song because my mom is really into Scottish folk music, and so she brought me up on Silly Wizard and The Old Blind Dogs. She's very Scottish and we've bonded over this type of music <3. OBD was my first concert, at the age of 5, and their violinist Jonny Hardie inspired me to become a violinist who played fiddle. I've always wanted to play this specific song, and I have yet to master it, but it just makes me move around and want to dance. I love this type of music and it all started with OBD ( This doesn't have lyrics ).

#2. "Mr. Bluesky", by The Electric Light Orchestra.

I give all credit to my daddy for getting me hooked on ELO. These are magical musicians. As for  this song, it's just been one of those happy songs that get me out of a bad mood and that my dad and I have to sing no matter when we hear it or where we are. I'm very proud that I know who this band is and that I appreciate their music, it means a lot to me. Also, my dad and I are very close so this makes me think of him whenever I hear it. Oh and the last like minute and a half are totally unnecessary with the choir and big ending, it's ridiculous and I love it!

Sun is shinin' in the sky
There ain't a cloud in sight
It's stopped rainin' ev'rybody's in a play
And don't you know
It's a beautiful new day hey,hey

Runnin' down the avenue
See how the sun shines brightly in the city
On the streets where once was pity
Mister blue sky is living here today hey, hey

Mister blue sky please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long
Where did we go wrong?

Hey you with the pretty face
Welcome to the human race
A celebration, mister blue sky's up there waitin'
And today is the day we've waited for

Hey there mister blue
We're so pleased to be with you
Look around see what you do
Ev'rybody smiles at you

Mister blue sky, mister blue sky
Mister blue sky

Mister blue, you did it right
But soon comes mister night creepin' over
Now his hand is on your shoulder
Never mind I'll remember you this
I'll remember you this way

Mister blue sky please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long
Where did we go wrong?

Hey there mister blue
We're so pleased to be with you
Look around see what you do
Ev'rybody smiles at you
Ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba
Ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba

#3. "Yellow Submarine", by The Beatles.

I love The Beatles. They are one of my favorite bands. By the age of 7 I had memorized all of the lyrics to all of the songs on their One album. I knew that I had to pick a song from their albums, but it was so hard because I love all of them. So I chose this one because it was one of the only songs that Ringo actually sang by himself, and since he was my favorite I automatically loved it more. It's also a simple and just perfectly imaginative song that makes me feel like I'm at home in my living room listening to music.

In the town where I was born
Lived a man who sailed to sea
And he told us of his life
In the land of submarines

So we sailed on to the sun
Till we found the sea of green
And we lived beneath the waves
In our yellow submarine

We all live in a yellow submarine,
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine
We all live in a yellow submarine,
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine

And our friends are all aboard
Many more of them live next door
And the band begins to play

We all live in a yellow submarine,
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine
We all live in a yellow submarine,
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine

As we live a life of ease
Everyone of us has all we need
Sky of blue and sea of green
In our yellow submarine.

We all live in a yellow submarine,
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine
We all live in a yellow submarine,
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine

We all live in a yellow submarine,
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine
We all live in a yellow submarine,
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine

#4. "Hakuna Matata", from "The Lion King".

Again, I knew that I had to pick a song from one of the may Disney films that are so near and dear to my heart. This was a very hard task to accomplish because, like The Beatles, I know almost every single song from almost every Disney film. However, since "The Lion King" is my favorite Disney film I just assumed to take my favorite song out of it. How can you not love this song? It's hilarious and just wonderful and is my childhood in lyrics. I just love it, and it reminds me of singing Disney songs with my sister (which we still do at 18 and 22 years old) and my friends.

Hakuna Matata! What a wonderful phrase

Hakuna Matata! Ain't no passing craze

It means no worries for the rest of your days

It's our problem-free philosophy

Hakuna Matata!

Hakuna Matata?

Yeah. It's our motto!

What's a motto?

Nothing. What's a-motto with you?

Those two words will solve all your problems

That's right. Take Pumbaa here
Why, when he was a young warthog...

When I was a young wart hog

Very nice

Thanks

He found his aroma lacked a certain appeal
He could clear the savannah after every meal

I'm a sensitive soul though I seem thick-skinned
And it hurt that my friends never stood downwind
And oh, the shameHe was ashamed
Thought of changin' my nameWhat's in a name?
And I got downheartedHow did ya feel?
Everytime that I...

Hey! Pumbaa! Not in front of the kids!
Oh. Sorry

Hakuna Matata! What a wonderful phrase
Hakuna Matata! Ain't no passing craze

It means no worries for the rest of your days

It's our problem-free philosophy
Hakuna Matata!
Hakuna Matata! Hakuna matata!
Hakuna Matata! Hakuna matata!
Hakuna Matata! Hakuna matata!
Hakuna Matata! Hakuna--

It means no worries for the rest of your days

It's our problem-free philosophy
Hakuna Matata!
(Repeats)

I say "Hakuna"

I say "Matata"

#5. "Send Me On My Way", by Rusted Root.

This is another song that I was introduced to by my family, and also from watching the movie "Matilda". Although I can't understand some of the lyrics, and even when I look them up they don't make any sense, I still love the song because of it's beat and because it's a part of my childhood and I have memories attached to it. I mean, can you really understand what they're singing? No. But that doesn't matter because the rhythm and beat makes up for any confusion :)

On my Way (12x)

I would like to reach out my hands
I may see you, I may tell you to run
Nobody safe, nobody on.

Well, pick me up with golden hand
I may see you, I may tell you to run
Nobody safe, nobody on.

I would like to hold my little hand
How we will run we will, how we will crawl we will

I would like to hold my little hand
How we will run we will, how we will crawl

Send me on my way
On my way (8x)
Mm hmm

I would like to reach out my hand
I may see you, I may tell you to run
Nobody safe, nobody on.

Well, pick me up with golden hand
I may see you, I may tell you to run
Nobody safe, nobody on.

I would like to hold my little hand
How we will run away, we will crawl away

I would like to hold my little hand
How we will run away, how we will crawl

Send me on my way
On my way
(8x)
Mm hmm

I would like to hold my little hand
How we will run away
How we will crawl

I would like to hold my little hand
How we will run away
How we will crawl

Send me on my way (5x)

I would like to reach out my hand
I may see you, I may tell you to run
Nobody safe, nobody on.

#6. "Stuck On You", by Elvis Presley.

The very first time I heard Elvis I don't know how old I was, but I was in my Gramma's living room and I fell in love instantly. She would bring over her friends and put on Elvis so that I would start singing and dancing around the house and she would show me off to her friends. She passed away two years ago, so Elvis makes me think of her and remember how much I loved her. As for this song specifically, it was part of the Lilo & Stitch soundtrack and it's the soundtrack to my dad and I cleaning the house or doing dishes. It's pure joy and old school rock n'roll!

You can shake an apple off an apple tree
Shake-a, shake- sugar,
But you'll never shake me
Uh-uh-uh
No-sir-ee, uh, uh
I'm gonna stick like glue,
Stick because I'm
Stuck on you

Gonna run my fingers thru your long black hair
Squeeze you tighter than a grizzly bear
Uh-uh-uh,
Yes-sir-ee, uh, uh
I'm gonna stick like glue
Stick, because I'm
Stuck on you

Hide in the kitchen, hide in the hall
Ain't gonna do you no good at all
'Cause once I catch ya and the kissin' starts
A team o' wild horses couldn't tear us apart

Try to take a tiger from his daddy's side
That's how love is gonna keep us tied
Uh-uh-uh
Yes-sir-ee, uh,uh
I'm gonna stick like glue
Stick, because I'm
Stuck on you

#7. "Breathe (2AM)", by Anna Nalick

This CD was the first ever that I bought with my own money. It cost $10 and I was 10-years old. I listened to Wreck of the Day every day, multiple times a day for I don't know how many months. My sister got so tired of my blasting it in my room that she hid it from me for a week. She was consequently grounded. This is the first song on the album and has always been my favorite because of the lyrics and the melodies. I've always been attracted to female voices and hers was the first that I could mimic and sing the songs, which doesn't happen that often. She's like therapy for me.

2 AM and she calls me 'cause I'm still awake
"Can you help me unravel my latest mistake?
I don't love him, winter just wasn't my season"

Yeah we walk through the doors, so accusing their eyes
Like they have any right at all to criticize
Hypocrites, you're all here for the very same reason

And cause you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable
And life's like an hourglass, glued to the table
No one can find the rewind button, girl
So cradle your head in your hands

And breathe, just breathe
Oh breathe, just breathe

In May he turned 21 on the base at Fort Bliss
"Just a Day," he said down to the flask in his fist
"Ain't been sober, since maybe October of last year"

Here in town you can tell he's been down for awhile
But, my God, it's so beautiful when the boy smiles
Wanna hold him, maybe I'll just sing about it

'Cause you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable
And life's like an hourglass, glued to the table
No one can find the rewind button, boys
So cradle your head in your hands

And breathe, just breathe
Oh breathe, just breathe

There's a light at each end of this tunnel
You shout 'cause you're just as far in as you'll ever be out
And these mistakes you've made, you'll just make them again
If you only try turning around

2 AM and I'm still awake, writing a song
If I get it all down on paper, it's no longer
Inside of me threatening the life it belongs to

And I feel like I'm naked in front of the crowd
'Cause these words are my diary, screaming out loud
And I know that you'll use them however you want to

But you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable
And life's like an hourglass, glued to the table
No one can find the rewind button now
Sing it if you understand

And breathe, just breathe
Whoa breathe, just breathe
Oh breathe, just breathe
Oh breathe, just breathe

#8. "Hide and Seek", by Imogen Heap

My daddy introduced me to Imogen Heap. And I think that she's fantastic. I don't usually listen to her type of music which is kinda punk like I would guess? But when I listened to her, I instantly loved her weird music partly because I had never heard anything like it and it seemed really funky and cool. She also has really awesome lyrics. This is another artist that my dad and I just jam out to in the car. This song has my favorite lyrics of all of her songs, and within the song she go into a lot of different ranges and dynamics which I love. Listening to her is my kinda punk/rock side coming out, which is usually when I'm angry about something.

Where are we?
What the hell is going on?
The dust has only just begun to form
Crop circles in the carpet
Sinking, feeling
Spin me around again
And rub my eyes
This can't be happening
When busy streets
A mess with people
Would stop to hold their heads heavy

Hide and seek
Trains and sewing machines
All those years
They were here first
Oily marks appear on walls
Where pleasure moments hung before
The takeover
The sweeping insensitivity of this
Still life
Hide and seek
Trains and sewing machines

(You won't catch me around here)
Blood and tears
They were here first
Mm, what'd you say?
Mm, that you only meant well
Well of course you did
Mm, what'd you say?
Mm, that it's all for the best
Of course it is
Mm, what'd you say?
Mm, that it's just what we need
You decided this
Mm, what'd you say?
Mm, what did she say?

Ransom notes keep falling out your mouth
Mid-sweet talk, newspaper word cutouts
Speak no feeling, no, I don't believe you
You don't care a bit, you don't care a bit
Ransom notes keep falling out your mouth
Mid-sweet talk, newspaper word cutouts
Speak no feeling, no, I don't believe you
You don't care a bit, you don't care a bit

(You don't care a bit)
Oh, no, you don't care a bit
Oh, no, you don't care a bit
Uh-uh, you don't care a bit
You don't care a bit
You don't care a bi

#9. "Laundry Room", by The Avett Brothers.

I love The Avett Brothers. They are folk, and country, and bluegrass all in one and I love their melodies and lyrics. They are some of most talented people out there in my opinion, and I love them so much that they had to be a part of my 'musical fingerprint' because they mean so much to me. This song is about young love. They sing about young love, and it's so beautiful. I don't have the right words to describe how their lyrics and melodies make me feel, so I hope you listen to this one :)

Don't push me out,
Just a little longer,
Stall your mother,
Disregard your fathers words.

Close the laundry door,
Tiptoe across the floor,
Keep your clothes on,
I got all that I can take
Teach me how to use
The love that people say you make

Stop your parents car
I just saw a shooting star
We can wish upon it
But we wont share the wish we made
But I can't keep no secrets,
I wish that you would always stay

Last night I dreamt the whole night long
I woke with a head full of songs
I spent the whole day
I wrote 'em down but its a shame
Tonight I'll burn the lyrics,
Cause every chorus was your name

Break this tired old routine,
And this time don't make me leave
I am a breathing time machine,
I'll take you all for a ride

#10. "Live and Die", by The Avett Brothers

This song is about finding that one person who is exactly like you and who is your perfect match. I believe in soulmates so I think that this song is especially beautiful because it's basically about finding your soulmate and never letting them go, living life to the fullest with them at your side. Also, it's by one of my favorite bands so that makes it even more special.

All it will take is just one moment and
you can say goodbye to how we had it planned
Fear like a habit run like a rabbit out and away
through the screen door to the unknown

and I want to love you and more
I want to find you and more
Where do you reside,
when you hide how can I find ya
Cause I wanna send you and more.
I wanna tempt you and more.
Can you tell that I am alive?
Let me prove it.

You and I we're the same
live and die we're the same
hear my voice know my name
you and I we're the same

Live like a pharaoh
sing like a sparrow anyway
even if there is no land or love in sight
we bloom like roses lead like moses out and away
through the bitter crowd to the daylight

and I want to love you and more
I want to find you and more
can you tell that I
am alive let me prove it to ya.

You and I we're the same
live and die we're the same
you rejoice I complain
but you and I we're the same
live and die we're the same
you and I we're the same
hear my voice know my name
you and I we're the same

I want to love you and more
I want to find you and more
where do you reside
when you hide how can I find ya
cause I wanna save you and more
I wanna tempt you and more
can you tell that I am alive let me prove it

You and I we're the same
live and die we're the same
you rejoice I complain
but you and I we're the same
live and die we're the same
you and I we're the same
hear my voice know my name
you and I
you and I

#11. "You and I", by Ingrid Michaelson.
This is the song that I want to play at my wedding for my first dance with my husband. It's quirky and funny and I love it so much. The lyrics fit just right and it fits my personality, and hopefully my future husband likes it. I really love Ingrid Michaelson because of her melodies and lyrics because they are always so pretty, but she has a gift at changing her sound and fitting the notes to her lyrics.

Don't you worry, there my honey
We might not have any money
But we've got our love to pay the bills

Maybe I think you're cute and funny,
Maybe I wanna do what bunnies do with you,
If you know what I mean

[Chorus]
Oh, let's get rich and buy our parents homes in the South of France
Let's get rich and give everybody nice sweaters
And teach them how to dance
Let's get rich and build our house on a mountain
Making everybody look like ants
From way up there, you and I, you and I, you and I,

Well you might be a bit confused
And you might be a little bit bruised
But baby how we spoon like no one else
So I will help you read those books
If you will soothe my worried looks
And we will put the lonesome on the shelf

[Chorus: x2]

#12. "Lullaby", by The Dixie Chicks.

This band holds a special place in my heart. I'm a country girl deep inside and I indulge in my love for them whenever I listen to the Dixie Chicks. They are spunky, fiesty, and kick-ass most of the time, but every once and awhile they have these wonderfully melodious songs that are very slow and calm and just wonderfully crafted. This song is one of the songs that I am going to sing to my children when they're going to bed. It's about the love between a mother and her child, one of the most beautiful things in the world.

They didn't have you where I come from
Never knew the best was yet to come
Life began when I saw your face
And I hear your laugh like a serenade

[Chorus]
How long do you want to be loved?
Is forever enough, is forever enough?
How long do you want to be loved?
Is forever enough?
'Cause I'm never, never giving you up

I slip in bed when you're asleep
To hold you close and feel your breath on me
Tomorrow there'll be so much to do
So tonight I'll drift in a dream with you

[Chorus]

As you wander through this troubled world
In search of all things beautiful
You can close your eyes when you're miles away
And hear my voice like a serenade

[Chorus]

How long do you want to be loved?
Is forever enough, is forever enough?
How long do you want to be loved?
Is forever enough?
'Cause I'm never, never giving you up
Is forever enough?
'Cause I'm never, never giving you up
